ABOUT OUR CLASSES

Welcome to Driver Education. The driver's license you are interested in is a wonderful privilege, yet it is also a big responsibility. Our course prepares you to become a safe responsible driver.

The Traffic Safety Bureau requires all persons between the ages of 15 - 17, who apply for a first-time driver's license, to have completed a Driver Education course. The classes at McGinnis School of Driving exceed the curriculum required by the State of New Mexico. During the 30 hours of classroom instruction we cover DWI Education and Prevention, defensive driving, rules and regulations and most importantly, the psychological aspects of being a good driver.We administer 5 written exams based on the lecture material and films.

Driving time, with a certified instructor, consists of 7 hours.(This will be spread out over the 6 months students are required to hold their permit.)

Although the state only requires 7 hours of driving instruction, if a student's driving skills are not satisfactory during the driving phase,(receiving a grade of less than a B+), the student must have additional hours of instruction until a passing grade is achieved. It is not unheard of for a student to require 10 or 15 hours of driving instruction in order to pass the behind-the-wheel phase. There will be no additional charge for the extra driving hours should your student require them.

The driving is divided into city street driving, where the most difficult driving problem: traffic, is encountered; and at our Controlled Driving Environment. The Controlled Driving Environment develops self-confidence and allows the student to practice basic driving skills, i.e. backing, parking, and k-turns, etc. that would be difficult if not dangerous to practice on the city streets. All driving is performed in newer model vehicles equipped with dual-control brakes and the latest safety features.We have all makes and models. We even have trucks.

We issue the permits and administer the state driving exam here at McGinnis. When you successfully complete the course you will present your Certificate of Completion from McGinnis and your personal driving log to the MVD and they will issue your Provisional License. This is the only trip you will have to make to the MVD.

We do ALL of the testing and issue the learner's permit right here at the school.

Payment: You are more than welcome to make payment anytime over the duration of the classroom segment of the course. Our only restriction is that we will not issue a learner's permit or start a students driving time until payment is made in full.

Payment is due no later than the last day of class.

Payment for the CHRISTMAS BREAK or SPRING BREAK class is due by the second day of class due to our condensed schedule.

We want all of our students to have a good time. Our instructors like to have a good time too. But remember the subjects we talk about in class and the skills you will learn are serious, deadly serious. We expect all of our students to have a mature and responsible attitude. As far as we are concerned, our students are adults and are expected to behave as such. We look forward to seeing you in our next class!
